CHENNAI: The state government on Saturday signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association to hold a WTA 250 tournament in Chennai in September and October this year, said minister for youth welfare and sports Siva V Meyyanathan.
“A happy news for tennis players and sports lovers that our chief minister has obtained permission to hold an international women’s tennis tournament in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Tennis Association president Vijay Amritraj signed an agreement in this regard with the government today,” said the minister.
The government would take efforts to give a facelift to the tennis stadium in Nungambakkam to host the tournament. The government has allocated Rs 5 crore as the first instalment to prepare for the facilities, the minister said.
The government signed a memorandum of understanding with the All-India Chess Federation (AICF) to conduct the 44th edition of Chess Olympiad 2022. Chief minister M K Stalin was present on the occasion.
The CM has constituted 18 working committees to ensure a smooth conduct of the Chess Olympiad at Mamallapuram in July and August. The government has also roped in senior bureaucrats to oversee the arrangements. “So far, 2,600 rooms have been reserved for the players coming from across the world for the Chess Olympiad,” said the minister.
AICF president Sanjay Kapoor said, “We had a meeting with the CM today. An MoU was exchanged between the AICF and the TN government for the hosting of the Chess Olympiad. It is the biggest event to be held in India, in terms of participation from a number of countries as 180 to 190 countries will participate in it,” he said.
Minister Meyyanathan noted that the government would also host beach volleyball tournaments in Chennai and other parts of the state at the end of this year.
