It’s just the kind of thing Amelia Honer does.
And while it might not be a big deal for her, a two-time PIAA tennis champion and one of the top junior players in the country, for others, it’s huge.
“We were at the courts at Council Rock North, a young player with her dad, and the girl said to me that she (Honer) won’t come out and help me,” CR North assistant tennis coach Mike Kusters said.
“And then Amelia pulls up. The wow factor was incredible. Amelia then starts working with her and giving her tips. The girls’ dad then said to me that he couldn’t believe that there are kids out there that are that friendly and helpful and would take the time to do what Amelia did for his daughter.”
What Honer — the No. 8 ranked 18-and-under player in the country — did was not out of the ordinary for the CR North senior.
“She’s about as normal a tennis prodigy that you’ll ever see,” Kusters said. “We’re talking about the best player in school history and one of the best players to ever come out of this area. Most players of her ability are either home-schooled or move away from home to an academy so they can concentrate more on their tennis.
“But that’s not what Amelia did. She and her parents wanted her to have the high school experience, the prom, hanging out with her friends, all that kind of stuff.”
The end result:
“I’m really happy with the way things turned out,” Honer said. “For a lot of my friends in the tennis world, tennis is their entire life. For me, it’s a huge thing, too, but having the other side is great, to have that life outside of tennis. To have some balance.
“It’s definitely very popular in the tennis community, if you have some success, you take the home-school route. I was lucky that my parents let me decide.”
